Few things epitomize luxurious Americana quite like Tommy Hilfiger and his brand.

A majestic penthouse atop the legendary Plaza Residences on Central Park South is a fitting setting for the fashion and lifestyle designer to choose for his one-of-a-kind residence, where rooms are grandly proportioned and classically detailed and views sweep across Fifth Avenue and Central Park.

A multimillion-dollar renovation revived the home’s French Renaissance style, which bestows it with exquisite millwork, handsome marble surfaces, tortoise shell and black lacquer walls, vintage limestone fireplaces, polished herringbone floors of reclaimed hardwood, antiqued mirrors, and thoughtfully selected Nanz hardware.

Ceilings soar from 10 to 35 feet, and spaces throughout are designed for elegant entertaining and delightfully relaxed living.

On the main level are grand salon with views of the Grand Armory Plaza, a library, a paneled office, a media room with an ornately detailed fireplace, and a formal dining room with a wet bar.

The eat-in kitchen, inspired by the bistros of Paris, is outfitted with top-tier appliances, a marble-topped island, an aluminum tray ceiling, and gold-plated hardware.

The highlight, however, is the tearoom, tucked into the penthouse’s dome. On its wall is a unique mural created by Hilary Knight, illustrator of the Eloise series of children’s books, which depicted the life of a girl who lived “on the tippy-top floor” of the Plaza Hotel.

A regal spiral staircase rises to the private quarters, which comprise four bedrooms and baths.

On one corner, in the building’s tower, is the luxurious master suite, a sophisticated retreat with an ornamental fireplace, two dressing rooms, a spectacular walk-in closet, and a spa-like bath.

Each of the three additional bedrooms is distinguished by a decorative theme: nautical, rock and roll, and “lavender fields.”

Guests are also afforded the privacy and comfort of their own sitting room.

A terrace on this level looks past the Plaza’s striking architectural details and out over the city’s iconic Central Park.
