A Manhattan couple maximized the garden space at this summer retreat in Bridgehampton, N.Y.

Trey and Jenny Laird purchased this classic home in Bridgehampton, N.Y., as a summer retreat for their family.

The couple was renting in the area when they found this house in 2002. The Lairds paid about $1.1 million for the home, and spent an additional $4 million upgrading the property.

The original house was built around 1913. ‘What we tried to do was first preserve the integrity of it,’ says Mrs. Laird. ‘So many people either knock down the old house or turn an old house into a modern house.’

The couple added a large living room and a master suite above it. The floors throughout are matched with the original walnut.

The 4,953-square-foot home is on the market for $6.9 million. Beate Moore with Sotheby’s International Realty has the listing.

The roof lines of the addition were integrated with the original home, according to Mrs. Laird. The couple dug down to give the new living area and master suite high ceilings. ‘Even though you come into an old house, you experience these raised ceilings toward the back,’ she said.

The property has six bedrooms and eight bathrooms.

The couple landscaped the grounds of the property to maximize the long, narrow plot, according to Mrs. Laird. The gardens are designed as a series of outdoor rooms. ‘Each one reveals a different experience,’ she says.

The property is lined with privet and hornbeam hedges.

‘In the summer, we live in back at the pool,’ says Mrs. Laid. The pool house pergola is draped in Wisteria vines.

The couple have a primary residence in Manhattan, where Mr. Laird runs an advertising agency. They are selling the home in Bridgehampton now that their children are grown.

From the front, the home looks like a quaint old farmhouse, said Mrs. Laird. ‘It was very important to us it didn’t look like a big house,’ she says.
