Carol Burnett’s Former Eight-Acre Compound in Santa Fe

Mansion Global

Price: $6.2 million

Known locally as the “former Carol Burnett compound,” this eight-acre property on Circle Drive has a main house, a two-bedroom gatehouse and a cozy two-bedroom casita.

“It’s a really comfortable and gracious house,” the local listing broker said. “It is really conceived as a multi-generational family retreat.”

“It’s totally private, totally walled in.”

The current owner, who has been in the home about eight years, “significantly expanded the main house.”

Ms. Burnett first built the gatehouse, which is “wonderful and opulent for a small property,” and then the classic Pueblo Revival-style main house in 1995. “She left three years after its completion.”

When the compound was featured in the December 1996 issue of Architectural Digest, the iconic cover photo the editors chose shows a grinning Ms. Burnett lazing on the mantel above a large fireplace.

Most of the main-floor public rooms have an open floor plan. Other architectural and design details include plaster walls, flagstone and hardwood floors, beamed ceilings, circular columns and stained glass windows.

The kitchen has custom cabinets, a key-shaped island, a copper sink and a breakfast nook.

The primary bedroom suite is quite large, with a fireplace, built-in seating by a large window, and dual bathrooms and walk-in closets.

The compound has “wonderful and massive western views, which means incredible sunsets.”

The 7,500-square-foot main house has three bedrooms, four full bathrooms and two partial bathrooms. There is also a gatehouse with two bedrooms, two full bathrooms and one partial bathroom along with a two-bedroom, one-bath casita that was likely built in the 1950’s.

The 8.08-acre property includes a 4.39-acre walled parcel with the houses and a 3.68-acre vacant lot.

Amenities include a swimming pool with a pool house and an outdoor kitchen; a gated driveway and a landscaped courtyard; multiple fireplaces; a game room with a pool table, a large TV, a bar and a deck with mountain views; a two-car garage and a one-car garage; a putting green and a chipping area; a horseshoe pit; and a hard-surface outdoor recreation area.

The broker describes Circle Drive as “one of the great old streets in Santa Fe, with some of the most iconic older homes” in the city, which is the capital of New Mexico.

“It’s one of the classic streets of the city, with incredible mountain views.”

The compound “is just four to five minutes” from the center of town.
